José Legarra, a Spanish architect associated with the European Union (EU) in Fiji, has expressed his appreciation for the country’s beauty, encompassing its land, people, and culture. Originally from Pamplona, Spain, a city with rich Roman history, Legarra shared his passion for art and sketching, which he regards as a universal language.

Since arriving in Fiji in August 2022, he has managed various EU projects related to water, sanitation, and infrastructure, not only in Fiji but throughout the region. Legarra described his role as a public servant, acknowledging the challenges and responsibilities involved. Though his work involves adherence to strict protocols, he finds joy in his creativity during his leisure time, often sketching scenes that capture his attention while exploring the area.

He uses a foldable chair and notepad for his sketches, viewing them as unfiltered representations of Fiji, striving for authenticity rather than beauty. Legarra noted the warmth he receives from locals, even in neighborhoods that others have deemed unsafe, as they express curiosity about his art.

As an architect, he appreciates both modern and historical structures, lamenting the deterioration of some older buildings in Suva while praising others that have undergone thoughtful renovations. He remarked on the environmental impact of certain architecture, particularly black skyscrapers that absorb heat, contributing to increased energy consumption and emissions.

Legarra also finds inspiration in Fiji’s lush natural environment and has a special fondness for hiking spots like Mount Korobaba, although he criticized the littering that detracts from its pristine beauty. He aims to promote environmental awareness through his artwork, advocating for positive behavior change regarding cleanliness and preservation.

He admires the cultural balance between the major ethnic groups in Fiji and appreciates the community spirit evident in shared interests, such as rugby. His optimistic outlook propels him forward, and he is eager to continue his artistic journey throughout his four-year contract. Legarra aspires to inspire local artists to express their passions through art, highlighting drawing’s unique ability to bridge language barriers. Emphasizing simplicity in life and art, he draws from a childhood love of sketching, celebrating the magic of freehand creativity.
