The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has issued a serious warning about the recent rise in intentional sugarcane field fires, labeling these acts as both irresponsible and criminal.
Dr. Vinesh Kumar, the chief executive officer of SRIF, pointed out the significant harm these fires inflict not only on farmers but also on the entire sugarcane industry. He stressed that deliberately setting fire to sugarcane fields is a criminal act that comes with harsh consequences.
“These fires are not just reckless; they are criminal acts that carry serious consequences,” Dr. Kumar stated. He noted that SRIF has incurred major losses in vital research data due to these fires.
Such data, often collected over extended periods, is crucial for fostering evidence-based improvements within the sugarcane sector. Dr. Kumar cautioned that a single act of arson can eliminate invaluable research in a moment, hindering progress and threatening the future of the industry.
He urged the public to recognize the seriousness of this situation, explaining that arson not only threatens the economic stability of farmers but also endangers the scientific research essential for the industry’s sustainability and advancement.
The SRIF has called on the community to stay alert and report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.
“By working together, we can protect our sugarcane fields, preserve vital research, and ensure the continued prosperity of our industry,” he concluded.
