Apple Gift Card Scams Under Investigation in Fiji

A mobile electronics retailer in Suva is currently being investigated by the Consumer Council of Fiji following reports of two significant transactions involving Apple gift cards where purchasers did not receive the full value of their orders. These incidents have raised concerns about the management and delivery of such transactions, prompting a swift inquiry by the Council.

In the first case, a buyer intended to acquire Apple gift cards and paid FJD$5000 for cards valued at USD$1600. The order was placed on June 21, 2024, but the customer ultimately received only a gift card worth USD$500. After numerous requests for the remaining gift cards totaling USD$1100, the buyer sought help from the Council.

In another case, a different buyer purchased Apple gift cards valued at FJD$7000 on June 14, 2024, and was promised quick delivery following payment. However, despite multiple efforts to reach the seller, the buyer did not receive the cards and experienced call diversions and unanswered inquiries.

Council chief executive Seema Shandil expressed concern over the amounts involved in these transactions, stating, “These may be isolated cases or part of a bigger pattern. People should be careful when spending such large amounts of money on such items.” She emphasized the importance of consumers exercising caution and ensuring accountability when buying high-value gift cards or using mobile repair services.

Shandil also noted the necessity for consumers to verify that vendors are authorized retailers to safeguard their rights. During the Council’s investigation, it was found that the trader had not demonstrated any proof of being an authorized dealer, raising questions about the legitimacy of their gift card sales and other repair services.

The Council is actively investigating these situations to protect consumer rights and prevent future occurrences. Consumers are advised to remain vigilant when making large purchases and to report any discrepancies or suspicious activities related to scams or fraud to the Consumer Council of Fiji via complaints@consumersfiji.org or by calling the National Toll-Free Helpline at 155.
