The French Ambassador to Fiji, François-Xavier Léger, has called for increased dialogue to address the ongoing political tension in New Caledonia.
This statement follows a demonstration by Fijian activists in Suva who rallied in support of the ‘Kanaky’, the indigenous people of New Caledonia.
Ambassador Léger expressed his satisfaction with the democratic process in Fiji, emphasizing the importance of freedom of expression.
He highlighted the ongoing political process and acknowledged that the French government has faced some political difficulties.
“People will be against it or support it. As the French Embassy here in Fiji, we are here to listen to comments, be it positive or negative,” said Ambassador Léger.
He added, “I am happy to see the people of Fiji exercising their right to demonstrate. It shows the vitality of democracy in Fiji that everyone can express their opinion. I am perfectly at ease with people having different opinions about the situation in New Caledonia.”
