An Educator in Fiji Faces Sexual Assault Charges
A teacher in Fiji has been brought before the court, charged with allegations of sexual assault against a student.
Lodging of the Complaint
The incident was first reported by the parents of the victim, who filed a report to the police. They claimed that their child, who is a student of the school where the accused was employed, was the victim of multiple sexual assaults perpetrated by the teacher.
The Defendants Appearance in Court
The educator was brought before the Nasinu Magistrates Court. The court granted an application by the prosecution for the case to be transferred to the High Court as its seriousness exceeds the jurisdiction of the Magistrate’s Court.
Retaining of Legal Counsel and Charges Against the Accused
The accused has appointed a legal counsel to represent him in the court proceedings. He is facing three charges of rape, one charge of sexual assault, one count of indecently annoying a person, and one count of indecent assault.
Case Status
The case has been set for mention at the High Court in Suva on June 21 and the accused is currently out on bail pending trial. The court has issued strict bail conditions that include reporting to the Nasinu Police station every Saturday.
