A 21-year-old maritime student is currently hospitalized following an alleged assault by a police officer after a fight in Nausori early Sunday morning. Vilikesa Bari, a final-year student at Fiji National University, was waiting for transportation with his cousin after attending a birthday celebration when the violence began around 12:30 am.
Bari described how the situation escalated rapidly, noting that a punch had struck him in the face and caused him to drop his phone. In the midst of the chaos, he saw police officers nearby and attempted to help deescalate the conflict. However, it is alleged that a police officer misjudged his intentions, believing he was part of the brawl, and forcibly took him to a police vehicle.
During the ride to the Nausori Police Station, Bari claimed that the officer struck him in the head with a flashlight, and upon arrival, he endured further abuse including punches and kicks. Allegedly, the officer told him not to instruct them on their duties.
After receiving treatment at the Nausori Health Centre, Bari reported an unsettling encounter where the officer allegedly offered him $500 to withdraw his complaint. Bari’s mother, Una Qionimacawa, expressed her shock and dismay over her son’s injuries and the subsequent attempt to bribe him. She has called on authorities to take appropriate action regarding the incident.
Pio Tikoduadua, the Minister for Home Affairs and a known advocate against police brutality, has yet to respond to the matter. Meanwhile, Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has initiated an immediate investigation into the accusations, emphasizing that police officers must abide by the law and be held accountable for their actions.
This incident raises broader concerns regarding police practices in Fiji, as highlighted in the recent Fiji National Security and Defence Review, which noted that police brutality is an ongoing issue.
In closing, it is crucial to highlight the swift response by the police department in launching an investigation, which reflects a commitment to accountability and transparency. It is hoped that this situation will not only lead to justice for Mr. Bari but also further prompt necessary reforms to prevent similar incidents in the future.
