Allegations of Bribery Rock Fiji’s Constitution Amendment Debate

Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has voiced serious allegations against the government, claiming that it is using “enticements and inducements” similar to bribery in an attempt to secure votes for the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025. In his recent statement, Seruiratu raised concerns about the government’s purported use of “underhanded tactics” to influence opposition members.

He pointed out that four opposition members who originally supported a motion related to suspending the standing order for the amendment bill later switched their stance, realizing that the proposed changes might undermine the voice of the citizens. Seruiratu asserted, “We are not the bitter losers,” maintaining that the opposition has effectively countered the government’s deceptive methods. He underscored the importance of a transparent and proper process in reviewing the Constitution.

The growing tensions within the opposition have been mirrored in recent articles, especially as members Sanjay Kirpal, Shalen Kumar, Sachida Nand, and Rinesh Sharma faced criticism for diverging from party lines. This situation has raised concerns about the unity and cohesion of the opposition bloc.

Further elevating the discourse on accountability, Independent MP Alvick Maharaj has reiterated the significance of transparency in legislative processes, warning that self-interest might be secretly guiding votes. He has called for the formation of a Parliamentary Select Committee to ensure public consultation on constitutional changes, reflecting a widespread desire for governance that is truly accountable to its citizens.

Despite the political strain, there remains room for hopeful dialogue. The possibility of constructive discussions between government and opposition groups could lead to substantial constitutional reforms that resonate with the desires of the Fijian populace, enhancing democratic principles in the country.
