Alcohol or Work? The Truth Behind PALM Worker Hospitalizations

Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh has stated that recent reports of hospitalization and death among PALM workers are linked to alcohol consumption rather than workplace conditions. Singh emphasized that there is no evidence of a spike in deaths related to work, asserting that the incidents involving PALM scheme workers were unfortunate but solely alcohol-related.

In a prior announcement, the Ministry of Employment revealed plans to visit PALM workers in Australia this October. The purpose of the visit is to address a range of concerns reportedly faced by the workers, including issues such as racism, bullying, heavy workloads, exploitation, threats, unsafe practices, unfair dismissals, and forced labor.

The ministry intends to engage with Australian officials, employers, and workers to identify and resolve these matters. In an effort to improve oversight and ensure compliance with fair labor standards, the Ministry will collaborate with Australian authorities and employers, which will involve regular inspections, audits, and a strict zero-tolerance policy against exploitation and mistreatment.

Additionally, the Australian Workers Union (AWU) has committed to supporting the enforcement of minimum standards during these inspections. The Employment Ministry also plans to strengthen its partnership with Australian agencies, including the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR).
