Alcohol or Labor? The PALM Workers Dilemma Unveiled

Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh has addressed recent reports of hospitalization and fatalities among workers in the PALM scheme, attributing these incidents to alcohol consumption rather than conditions at the workplace. “There is nothing rising,” Singh commented regarding the recent deaths, emphasizing that the cases involving hospitalized PALM workers and one deceased individual were all linked to alcohol. He expressed that while it is unfortunate, these matters are unrelated to their work environment.

In a previous announcement, the government, through the Ministry of Employment, revealed plans to visit PALM workers in Australia this October. The purpose of this visit is to tackle various issues reportedly encountered by workers, including racism, bullying, excessive workloads, exploitation, threats, unsafe practices, unjust terminations, and forced labor.

The ministry intends to collaborate with Australian authorities, employers, and workers to discuss and find solutions to these challenges. To enhance oversight and ensure fair labor practices are followed, the ministry will work closely with Australian agencies. This partnership will involve regular workplace inspections, audits, and the enforcement of a strict zero-tolerance stance against exploitation and mistreatment.

The Australian Workers Union (AWU) has committed to supporting the maintenance of minimum standards during these inspections. Furthermore, the Employment Ministry plans to strengthen its cooperation with Australian organizations, including the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR).
