Alarming Trends in Road Safety Revealed

The Land Transport Authority has taken significant measures against drivers from August 1, 2023, to June 1, 2024, including counseling 58 drivers, issuing 1206 warning letters, suspending 13 driver licenses, and canceling 112 licenses.

Despite a reduction in road fatalities as of July 11, 2024, with 29 deaths compared to 51 for the same period last year, LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa expressed concern over the persistent trends causing road accidents.

Rokosawa highlighted that speeding remains the leading cause of accidents and fatalities, followed by drink driving and driver fatigue. Additionally, he noted that incidents involving pedestrians at fault and hit-and-run cases are significant areas of concern.

“The LTA is committed to addressing these issues through stringent enforcement, comprehensive monitoring, and ongoing road safety awareness campaigns,” he stated.

He also mentioned that for the month of July, the Authority and the Fiji Police Force have launched a special operation to raise awareness about the dangers of jaywalking and to encourage responsible behavior among pedestrians.
