The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has taken significant measures against errant drivers, with 58 drivers being counselled, 1206 warning letters issued, 13 driver licences suspended, and 112 licences cancelled from August 1, 2023, to June 1, 2024.
Despite a reduction in road fatalities as of July 11, 2024, with 29 deaths compared to 51 during the same period last year, LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted ongoing concerns over the causes of road accidents.
Rokosawa indicated that speeding remains the leading cause of accidents and fatalities, followed by drink driving and driver fatigue. He also pointed out that incidents involving pedestrians at fault and hit-and-run cases are areas of significant concern.
“The LTA is committed to addressing these issues through stringent enforcement, comprehensive monitoring, and ongoing road safety awareness campaigns,” he stated.
“For the month of July, the Authority and the Fiji Police Force have launched a special awareness operation aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of jaywalking and encouraging responsible behaviour among pedestrians.”
