Alarming Rise in Suicide Cases Raises Urgent Questions in Fiji

The Fiji Police Force has reported concerning suicide statistics for the period of January 1 to January 22, showing 63 cases, which is slightly down from 66 during the same timeframe last year. Additionally, there were 44 attempted suicide cases this year compared to 47 in the previous year.

Acting Police Commissioner Sakeo Raikaci expressed alarm at these statistics, highlighting the importance of fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding amid growing social issues. He noted that among the reported cases, there were eight suicides and five attempted suicides involving individuals under the age of 18.

The highest number of cases was recorded among those over 60 years, with a total of nineteen suicides and two attempts. Males showed a greater prevalence in the statistics, with 50 reported cases of suicide.

Commissioner Raikaci urged community leaders to assist in changing the narrative surrounding mental health and suicide. He emphasized the necessity of nurturing supportive environments and safe spaces for open discussions. Raikaci also pointed out the challenges posed by cyberbullying and called for greater care in online interactions.

The police identified several reasons linked to suicide and attempted suicide, including spousal and family disputes, relationship issues, stress, and health concerns. The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 is “Changing the Narrative,” encouraging communities to start conversations around these critical issues.
