“Alarming Rise in Sexual Offences: Fiji Police Warn of Growing Crime Trends”

In September, the Fiji Police Force recorded a total of 118 serious sexual offences. Acting Police Commissioner Sakeo Raikaci reported that the most frequently reported crime was rape, followed by indecent assault, sexual assault, and abduction of minors under 18 years, among others.

Raikaci stated that six police officers have been charged with serious offences, including abuse of office, assault causing actual bodily harm, and wrongful confinement. He noted that police officers themselves have been victims of crime while performing their duties, with 171 officers affected by 219 reports, including incidents of serious assaults and obstruction while enforcing the law.

During the same month, the police charged 838 individuals for various offences, of which 48 were juveniles. The majority of offenders were aged between 18 and 35 years (486), while 266 were aged 36 to 55 years, and 38 were over 56.

Raikaci called on communities to collaborate with the Fiji Police Force in the fight against crime, expressing concern about the involvement of juveniles in criminal activities, which adversely affects their education and future prospects. He emphasized the need for support from families and communities in mentoring youth.

As the festive season approaches, the Fiji Police Force plans to enhance its operations and urges the public to adhere to the law to ensure safer communities for everyone.
