The Fiji Police Force has reported concerning suicide statistics for the period of January 1-22, indicating 63 cases, slightly down from 66 during the same timeframe last year. Additionally, there were 44 attempted suicides recorded, compared to 47 in the previous year.
Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci expressed that these figures are deeply troubling. He emphasized the need for a culture of acceptance and understanding to address the growing social issues facing society.
Notably, eight suicides and five attempted suicides involved individuals under the age of 18. The highest number of cases was among seniors aged over 60, with nineteen suicides and two attempted suicides. The data also highlighted that men are disproportionately affected, accounting for 50 of the reported suicide cases.
Commissioner Raikaci urged community leaders to help reshape the narrative surrounding mental health. He called for the creation of supportive environments that encourage open discussions about these issues. Raikaci also pointed out the rising concern of cyberbullying as part of modern challenges and urged Fijians to foster kindness in both physical and virtual spaces.
The police have identified several contributing factors to suicides and attempted suicides, including marital disputes, family conflicts, relationship problems, stress, and health issues. The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day in 2024 is centered around “Changing the Narrative,” with an emphasis on initiating conversations about mental health.
