Alarming Rise in Fiji’s Suicide Rates Sparks Urgent Call for Change

The Fiji Police Force has reported concerning statistics regarding suicide cases for the first 22 days of January, showing a total of 63 cases, slightly down from 66 during the same period last year. Meanwhile, the number of attempted suicides stands at 44, compared to 47 in the previous year.

Acting Police Commissioner Sakeo Raikaci expressed alarm over these figures, emphasizing the need to address the increasing social issues facing the community. He highlighted the importance of fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding.

Among the reported cases, eight suicides and five attempted suicides involved individuals under 18 years of age. Additionally, the highest number of cases occurred among those aged 60 and above, with 19 reported suicides and two attempted suicides. The data also reveals a higher incidence of suicides among males, totaling 50 cases.

Commissioner Raikaci has urged community leaders to help shift the narrative surrounding mental health issues. He advocates for a culture that encourages understanding and provides safe spaces for discussions. Furthermore, he noted the growing challenge of cyberbullying in modern society and called for greater care and compassion in online interactions.

The police have identified several contributing factors to suicide and attempted suicide cases, including spousal and family disputes, relationship issues, stress, and health concerns. The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 is “Changing the Narrative,” calling for open conversations about mental health.
