The Fiji Police Force has reported disturbing suicide statistics for the period of January 1 to 22, with 63 cases this year compared to 66 during the same timeframe last year. In addition, there were 44 attempted suicides reported, slightly down from 47 in the previous year.
Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci expressed deep concern over these figures, highlighting the growing social issues that the community faces. He emphasized the need to foster a culture of acceptance and understanding within society.
Among the reported cases, eight suicides and five attempted suicides involved individuals under 18 years of age. The highest number of cases was among those over 60, with nineteen suicides and two attempts. Notably, males accounted for a significant majority, with 50 reported cases of suicide.
Commissioner Raikaci urged community leaders to take action in reshaping the narrative surrounding mental health and suicide. He advocated for the development of a more supportive and understanding environment, where individuals feel safe to discuss their challenges.
Furthermore, he pointed out the rising issue of cyberbullying as a contemporary challenge that needs attention, encouraging Fijians to be compassionate in both physical and virtual interactions.
The police have identified several factors contributing to suicides and attempted suicides, including disputes within marriages and families, relationship issues, stress, and health concerns.
The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 is “Changing the Narrative,” aiming to encourage open conversations about these critical issues.
