Alarming Increase in Fiji’s Suicide Statistics Sparks Urgent Call for Community Support

The Fiji Police Force has released concerning suicide statistics for the period from January 1 to January 22, showing 63 cases this year compared to 66 in the same timeframe last year. The total number of attempted suicides stands at 44, down from 47 during the previous year.

Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci expressed deep concern over these trends, emphasizing the importance of fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding in light of the societal challenges faced today. He highlighted that among the reported cases, eight suicides and five attempts involved individuals under the age of 18. The highest number of incidents, however, was recorded among those over 60 years, with nineteen suicides and two attempted cases.

There is a notable prevalence of suicide among males, accounting for 50 reported cases. Commissioner Raikaci urged community leaders to help shift the narrative around these issues, advocating for a more supportive environment that encourages open discussions about mental health.

Raikaci pointed out that modern policing also contends with challenges such as cyberbullying and called for greater kindness in both real and virtual interactions. He noted that the reasons behind the suicides and attempts often include disputes with spouses or family, relationship issues, stress, and illness.

The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 is “Changing the Narrative,” which seeks to encourage conversations about mental health and well-being.
