Local coach Anginesh Prasad has realized a heartfelt dream of his late father-in-law by leading the Labasa Football Association to victory in a recent tournament. Known affectionately in the football community as AJ, Prasad joined Labasa’s coaching panel during the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) as a Technical Advisor. Together with Coach Ravneel Pratap, he successfully guided the Babasiga Lions to a memorable win against Navua at Churchill Park in Lautoka last month.
In a statement to FijiLive, Prasad shared that this victory held profound significance for him, as he dedicated the achievement to his late father-in-law, Kamla Prasad, and his family in Lagalaga, Labasa. “Since I began coaching, he had always asked me to help Labasa win a tournament. Although this didn’t happen while he was alive, once Labasa President Rayaz approached me for assistance with the IDC, I jumped at the opportunity,” he noted.
AJ expressed that this accomplishment is particularly special, affirming his father-in-law would be proud and watching over the team. He emphasized the importance of dedication to whichever district seeks their coaching assistance. His gratitude extended to the players, officials, and fans for welcoming him into the team.
The strategy for the tournament was straightforward: win the first two group matches, which they accomplished. They approached the match against Navua with caution, resting players with yellow cards, focusing on their overall progression in the tournament. In the knockout stages, Prasad drew on his experience, emphasizing the crucial nature of semifinals and finals. The team successfully overcame Nadi and, despite facing a formidable Navua squad in a penalty shootout, his players maintained composure and scored on all attempts.
With their mission now accomplished, Prasad, who also serves as an Operations Manager for P. Meghji Group of Companies, plans to take a short break before deciding on his future in coaching. “I have not finalized my plans for next year yet, but as a devoted football enthusiast, I remain open to supporting any team that may require my guidance,” he concluded.
This inspiring story not only highlights the personal journey of a coach fulfilling a family dream but also showcases the dedication and spirit of the Labasa football team. It serves as a reminder that passion and teamwork can lead to meaningful achievements, and encourages others to embrace opportunities with an open heart.
