The Government is outlining its priorities for the next five years, placing a strong emphasis on Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a fundamental element of the National Development Plan (NDP). This strategy aims to bolster research, development, and innovation (RDI) in both public and private sectors, positioning the nation to excel in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0).
RDI encompasses activities that foster the creation of new products or the enhancement of existing ones, including the development of technology. The Fourth Industrial Revolution signifies the transformative impact that emerging technologies, like AI, are having on various industries and economies.
Currently, the NDP indicates that RDI activities in both sectors are minimal, highlighting a general lack of understanding regarding their importance and the benefits they can provide. The document further emphasizes that with the onset of IR 4.0, driven by digitalization, Fiji must adopt and implement these technologies across all facets of its operations and development.
The plan outlines that by prioritizing RDI and technological application, the Fiji Government aspires to enhance productivity, raise incomes, and create high-value job opportunities. This approach is essential for diversifying the economic foundation and strengthening resilience against external challenges.
To support this transition, the government intends to work with the private sector to develop policies and strategies that foster RDI and promote technology integration. The Government, in collaboration with private entities, will formulate and execute policies, strategies, and frameworks for RDI while encouraging technology adoption.
RDI initiatives will concentrate on strategic areas that align with development priorities, such as agriculture, potential sectors within manufacturing and services, as well as environmental conservation and disaster risk management. Special emphasis will be given to Artificial Intelligence and leveraging its advantages.
The NDP suggests that the Government aims to utilize new technologies to enhance the economy and generate improved job opportunities by focusing on research and innovation.
