Aging Gracefully: Rick Rickman’s Secrets to Surviving and Thriving at 90

Rick Rickman reflects on the essence of reaching 90, attributing it largely to an individual’s character. As he approaches this milestone, he has transitioned from his passion for golf to pursuits like reading, writing, painting, and enjoying drinks, especially after an injury affected his ability to play golf.

Once the secretary for the Fiji Golf Association, Mr. Rickman took up acrylic painting, describing his art as reflective of his perspective rather than conventional views. He is also an alumnus of the London School of Printing and Fine Arts before serving in the Royal Air Force.

As for his diet, Mr. Rickman attributes his longevity to his food choices, particularly incorporating homemade mixtures of turmeric, ginger, and lemon. He emphasizes the benefits of turmeric and has utilized it alongside other natural ingredients for over two decades to help manage health concerns. He remains cautious about water quality, employing a triple-filtered water system at his home, which he jokingly enhances with whiskey from time to time. His appreciation for quality meat is evident, as he often buys whole sirloin and expertly ages it at home.

Rickman also shares a controversial perspective on COVID-19 vaccinations, expressing concerns about potential health risks associated with the vaccines, particularly citing incidences of myocarditis and other complications. He reflects on the loss of two friends to what he describes as “turbo cancer,” a term linked to conspiracy theories surrounding the vaccines. While he acknowledges having had COVID-19 with mild symptoms, he has not taken the vaccines, expressing a cautious stance toward them.

Looking forward to his 90th birthday in November, Mr. Rickman hopes to witness action taken against the Fiji National Provident Fund regarding past injustices faced by pensioners. He is vocal about the challenges many were subjected to under previous governance, particularly concerning pension issues.

In response to questions about his favorite places in Fiji, Mr. Rickman highlights Nadarivatu for its unspoiled environment, and Vuda Marina as his preferred dining spot due to its pleasant atmosphere and affordable lunch specials. He also shares his preference for cocoa seasoned with chili and honey over traditional coffee or tea.

Throughout his extensive travels and experiences, he finds it challenging to pinpoint a singular bucket list destination within Fiji, having already explored many notable locations.
