At 45 years old, Sereana Korovulavula is a shining example of the belief that it’s never too late to pursue formal education. Enrolled in the Matua Programme at Nabua Secondary School, she stood alongside 9,088 Year 13 students as they sat for their external examinations yesterday.

Ms. Korovulavula’s journey illustrates her determination to overcome personal challenges and academic hurdles. With her family serving as her primary source of motivation, she expressed how important this pursuit of knowledge is for her. “It has never been easy, but I know it will be worth it,” she stated, showcasing both resilience and optimism.

Originally from Nabudrau Village in Rewa, Ms. Korovulavula is a mother of six children, balancing her education while taking care of her youngest child, who is only three years old. She and her family moved to Suva after the first wave of COVID-19 for better job opportunities for her husband, who now works as a mechanic. Her eldest son, a flight attendant, is also supporting her financially as she undertakes her studies.

Despite facing financial challenges, including commuting costs and household expenses, Ms. Korovulavula’s determination persists. She has successfully completed Year 12 and is hopeful about finishing Year 13. Her ambitions don’t stop there; she plans to pursue courses in human resources and finance at the university level.

Ms. Korovulavula encourages others who have dropped out of school to consider the Matua Programme, highlighting the dedication of its teachers and the opportunity it presents for personal growth. “I urge people who have dropped out of school not to have any doubts and pursue their dreams,” she said, emphasizing that support and encouragement can pave the way for success.
