In an inspiring display of determination and resilience, Mario Ravuyawa, a talented young athlete from Tukavesi, Cakaudrove, clinched the gold medal in the under-14 boys 400m race at the 2024 Tuckers Ice-Cream Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Championships held at HFC Bank Stadium in Laucala Bay, Suva. Despite running in lane eight, considered one of the most challenging positions, Ravuyawa finished with an impressive time of 56.27 seconds, embodying the spirit of overcoming adversity.
What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that Ravuyawa trained without proper track shoes, a significant hindrance for any runner. “I had no track shoes to train with, and I just wanted to thank my cousin for buying me a pair to run with,” he explained, highlighting the challenges he faced in preparation. This heartfelt support from family played a crucial role in his journey.
His emotional victory came as he recalled his mother’s motivating words, urging him to work hard and strive for success. Overwhelmed with joy after crossing the finish line, he could not hold back his tears, marking a memorable moment for the young athlete.
Looking ahead, Ravuyawa expressed excitement for transitioning to secondary school, planning to attend Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College in Nabua, Suva. This opportunity will allow him to further develop his skills and pursue his athletic dreams.
Ravuyawa’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the love of family, showcasing how one can rise above challenges. His journey serves as an inspiration for young athletes everywhere, emphasizing that with dedication and support, anything is possible.
