Single mother Salote Maria Taukeisalili has overcome significant challenges to earn a degree, demonstrating remarkable determination. The 24-year-old, who hails from Nakorovou Village in Bua and is a devoted mother of two, received invaluable support from her family, friends, and loved ones during her tertiary education.
Ms. Taukeisalili was born and raised in Namuamua, her mother’s village in the Namosi highlands, as the eldest of four siblings. She completed her primary education at Ro Matanitobua Memorial School and attended Vashist Muni College and Nasinu Secondary School for her secondary education.
She later enrolled at the University of the South Pacific in Lautoka, originally majoring in commerce but ultimately shifting her focus to a Bachelor of Arts Graduate Certificate in Education, with a specialization in Geography and English. Her journey into the workforce began in 2019, coinciding with her pregnancy with her first child, an experience she described as “challenging but rewarding.”
Despite battling morning sickness and physical discomforts, Ms. Taukeisalili persevered with her studies and welcomed her second son, Ezekiel, in 2022. She noted that while she shared the news of her pregnancy with her children’s father, he showed no intention of support, prompting her to rely on her family’s assistance.
Ms. Taukeisalili’s motivation remained strong throughout her struggles, particularly after the birth of her first son. She felt an overwhelming sense of purpose and commitment to achieving her educational goals.
With the help of her immediate family, she was able to continue her studies. Her mother took on the role of babysitter, allowing Ms. Taukeisalili to stay with relatives in Navua to reduce the strain of commuting to her classes.
Initially, she found it difficult to leave her young son, fearing she was being selfish, but the encouragement from her family helped her to persevere. She expressed profound gratitude to her parents for their unwavering belief in her and for enabling her to complete her education.
In addition to her academic pursuits, Ms. Taukeisalili has also showcased her passion for fashion by participating in Fiji Fashion Week multiple times. In April, she tearfully accepted her certificate at the Vodafone Arena, holding her children close.
Shortly afterward, she was appointed to teach at Dilkusha Methodist High School in Nausori. Ms. Taukeisalili attributed her accomplishments to divine guidance, expressing gratitude for the struggles that shaped her resilience. Reflecting on her journey, she expressed confidence that she would not change a thing about her experiences.
