AG Pushes for Action on Information Act – What’s the Hold Up?

Attorney-General Graham Leung has expressed regret over the delay in implementing the Information Act. In his first speech in Parliament yesterday, he noted that although the Information Act was passed in 2018, it has yet to be put into effect.

“It is my intention to go to Cabinet as soon as possible and seek its support to give effect to the law,” Leung stated.

Leung emphasized the importance of public access to government-held information, stating that it allows individuals to better understand the role of government and the decisions made on their behalf. An informed citizenry, he argued, enables greater accountability for government actions and policies.

“Once the Act is in force, it will allow access to information to improve the lives of people, making available to them information relating to education, healthcare, and other public services,” he said.

Leung underscored that the right to know is essential for upholding other basic human rights, promoting transparency, justice, and development, and strengthening democracy. He reiterated his commitment to seeking Cabinet’s approval to implement the law as soon as possible.
