The long-awaited quest for closure for the family of Lance Corporal Simione Rawaileba has finally reached a significant milestone after twenty-four years. Following heartfelt dialogues, former members of the Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit (CRWU) extended their apologies to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and families affected by the 2000 mutiny, an event that shattered many lives, including that of Rawaileba’s family.
Salanieta Rawaileba, the widow of LCPL Rawaileba, has contended with the pain of her husband’s violent death during the mutiny, which pitted loyal soldiers against CRW members. Their family, now comprising five children—two of whom have followed in their father’s footsteps and joined the military—has endured years of grief.
Reflecting on the enduring loss at each commemoration, Ms. Rawaileba expressed, “We’re always filled with his huge loss, nothing seemed to have really healed despite the wreaths and embraces we get.” However, yesterday’s act of reconciliation has brought her a sense of healing that has long been sought, stating, “Today, we received that healing. Nothing can compare to people owning up to their wrongdoings and admitting their mistakes of the past.”
Her son, Mulase, who was merely a toddler when his father was killed, joined her during this significant event. He remarked on the emotional weight of the day, emphasizing the importance of forgiveness. “God is a God of forgiveness, and this reconciliation is to heal everyone,” he said, expressing gratitude towards the Government and the RFMF Commander for facilitating this much-needed program.
This moment marks not only a personal restoration for the Rawaileba family but also serves as a broader reminder of the significant importance of acknowledgment, healing, and the path towards reconciliation in communities scarred by conflict. It is hoped that this gesture sets a precedent for ongoing dialogue and mutual understanding among those affected by past grievances.
In conclusion, this event serves as a testament to the power of reconciliation and forgiveness, allowing families to find closure and move forward from the shadows of the past.
