Makayla Sukhu, a talented full forward for the Fiji Junior Vonu Under-17 team, aspires to carve out a successful path in the Australian Football League (AFL), inspired by her mother, Vilisi Sukhu, who was part of the inaugural women’s Fiji Vonu team in 2014.
Makayla credits her mother as her primary motivation for pursuing AFL, stating, “AFL is a different sport, and my mum was the main reason I took up this sport because she represented Fiji.” Her lifelong passion for the game has propelled her to find joy in the sport from a young age.
She emphasizes the importance of team cohesion and physical stamina in AFL, noting, “This sport has really brought out key factors because AFL is different sports in one.” Makayla also expresses her desire to help her sister engage in the sport and nurture its growth in Fiji. “It’s a multi-skill sport; it’s quite challenging at first, but you’ll be able to carry through,” she explained.
In addition to her AFL pursuits, Sukhu has made her mark in chess, earning the Women’s Candidate Master (WCM) title at the 45th World Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, where she represented Fiji and achieved a personal record of 3.5 out of 7 in a competition with participants from 193 countries. Furthermore, she actively participates in netball for Suva Grammar School and the Lomaiviti club in the development princess grade.
Balancing sports and academics has its challenges, but Sukhu appreciates the mental relief sports provide from academic pressures. She acknowledges the role of divine support in her achievements and expresses heartfelt gratitude to her parents for their unwavering support, stating, “They are always here in my corner.”
