The Fiji Tribe team, representing the Australia Football League (AFL), is gearing up to compete for the Pacific Cup in Brisbane, Australia, from November 14 to 24. Head coach Alipate Navuso announced the team’s ambitions during a kit presentation sponsored by Flame Tree.
Navuso highlighted their rigorous preparation, stating, “It’s been seven weeks of solid training, with daily sessions five days a week,” emphasizing the dedication of the players. The roster includes eight seasoned athletes who have previously represented Fiji in international competitions, as well as nine players developed through the AFL Fiji pathway programs. Notably, eleven of the team members will be making their debut at this level.
Despite challenges in securing sponsorship, as the AFL is considered a minor sport in Fiji, the team has found support from their sponsors. Navuso expressed gratitude for their contributions and praised the skill set and commitment of both the experienced and newer players. “The other eleven players are underdogs, and they are there to prove themselves on the field,” he noted, reflecting on the determination within the squad.
Throughout their preparation, the team’s commitment has been evident, with no absenteeism reported during training sessions. The players have shown resilience, with several taking personal financial responsibility for their travel and accommodation arrangements in Suva for training.
Navuso expressed his appreciation for the players’ sacrifices and the support from their families, reinforcing a strong sense of unity within the team as they strive for success in the upcoming tournament.
In a hopeful and positive light, the dedication to training and the spirit of togetherness within the team can inspire not only their performance at the Pacific Cup but also encourage growth and recognition for the AFL in Fiji. As they face tougher competition, the Fiji Tribe team embodies determination and pride in representing their country.
