The Fiji Tribe team of the Australian Football League (AFL) is gearing up for a strong showing at the Pacific Cup, which will take place in Brisbane, Australia, from November 14 to 24. Head coach Alipate Navuso expressed excitement about the team’s preparations during a recent event where they received training kits from sponsors.
Navuso shared that the team has dedicated seven weeks to rigorous daily training sessions, taking Sundays off for rest. The squad boasts a mix of talent, including eight experienced players with previous international competition experience from the 2011, 2014, and 2017 World Cups. Additionally, nine players have developed their skills through AFL Fiji’s pathway programs for youth, marking their first transition to the senior team.
The team also welcomes 11 newcomers, who recently took up the sport, adding to the excitement of representing Fiji at this high-profile event. Despite the challenges of securing sponsorships due to AFL’s lesser popularity in Fiji, they have gained support from Flame Tree, which Navuso appreciates.
Navuso emphasized that the combination of seasoned players and emerging talents represents the team’s greatest strength. The focus has been on honing fundamental skills and boosting fitness levels, while the newcomers are eager to prove their capabilities on the field.
The coach acknowledged the unwavering commitment of the players during training, noting that there has been no absenteeism over the past seven weeks. He also expressed gratitude to the sponsors and families who have supported the players during their preparations, as many players have contributed financially and committed their time to the training sessions.
With a blend of experience and new talent, the Fiji Tribe team is poised to make a meaningful impact at the Pacific Cup, embodying resilience and dedication as they represent their country on an international stage.
This prospect not only showcases Fiji’s growing involvement in AFL but also highlights the potential for further development of the sport in the region. The players’ determination and teamwork could inspire future generations to engage with AFL, fostering a larger community around the sport.
