“Addressing the Unseen Crisis: Supporting Fiji’s Youth in Diabetes Struggles”

Some teenagers facing a lack of acceptance and support from their families have considered ending their lives, according to Marawa Kini, acting executive officer of Diabetes Fiji. One of the main challenges the organization encounters is addressing cultural beliefs, customs, and stigma that hinder young people from obtaining necessary support.

Mr. Kini emphasized that “Diabetes Fiji is dedicated to collaborating with stakeholders, civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, government bodies, faith-based organizations, and the media to tackle these issues.” He has called on the government to invest more in public health programs organized by Diabetes Fiji and has reached out to regional and international organizations for support in their initiatives.

“If we do not address the challenges posed by diabetes, we risk an increasing number of Fijian citizens needing hospitalization,” Mr. Kini warned. Diabetes Fiji has submitted a proposal for funding in the 2024-25 National Budget but has not received financial backing from the government.

“As a charitable organization, we are always open to any support, whether in kind or financial, from generous donors to help us continue our important work,” Mr. Kini remarked. “Together, with the help of our partners and the community, we are fostering a brighter, healthier future for our young champions and their families.” He also expressed gratitude to parents who are devoted to caring for their children and noted that Diabetes Fiji offers programs to support parents through training and advocacy.
