The issue of a shortage of primary school teachers was a major topic at the recent Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting, which took place in Tamavua Village, Suva.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro acknowledged that this problem has affected many schools in the province and emphasized that the Ministry of Education is actively seeking effective solutions. He mentioned that the current teacher shortage is a lingering problem inherited by the Coalition Government and highlighted efforts to recruit secondary school graduates willing to teach at the primary level.

Radrodro also noted the specific need for teachers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, which had been raised during the discussions. He assured that the ministry plans to collaborate with the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board (TSLS) in the upcoming year to improve the recruitment of teacher trainees. The goal is to encourage these trainees to become teachers in areas facing the most significant shortages.

Furthermore, Radrodro inspired students in the region to aspire for greater achievements. He encouraged them to “dream beyond the walls of the classroom,” assuring that opportunities are always within reach. He advised students to maintain focus on their goals and to prioritize their faith in all their endeavors.

The Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting served as a platform for addressing critical educational challenges in the province.
