ADB Unveils New Strategy to Boost Fiji’s Resilience and Development

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has unveiled a new country partnership strategy (CPS) aimed at enhancing Fiji’s resilience to both economic and climate-related challenges for the period of 2024-2028. ADB’s Director General for the Pacific, Leah Gutierrez, emphasized that this strategic partnership will be aligned with Fiji’s recently introduced National Development Plan 2025-2029.

Gutierrez noted that the new CPS aims to strengthen Fiji’s public finances, improve quality infrastructure and services, and promote a greener and more diversified private sector. The strategy will place a particular emphasis on public sector management, developing climate-resilient transportation infrastructure, and enhancing urban water and wastewater services.

Moreover, the CPS will address new areas of focus such as coastal protection for at-risk communities, the upgrade of national healthcare facilities, and the acceleration of Fiji’s transition towards renewable energy sources.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, remarked that the strategy illustrates the close collaboration between the Fiji Government and ADB, aligning future support with Fiji’s National Development Plan 2025–2029. He added that this 5-year strategy is designed to strengthen Fiji’s climate and disaster resilience through innovative financial solutions, infrastructure improvements, climate policy reforms, and enhanced access to concessional climate finance.

Since 1970, the ADB has been a significant supporter of Fiji, providing 117 public sector loans, grants, and technical assistance amounting to $991 million.
