The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has unveiled its new country partnership strategy (CPS) for Fiji, covering the years 2024 to 2028. This strategy will focus on enhancing public sector management, improving access to climate-resilient transport infrastructure, and ensuring resilient urban water and wastewater services.
Announced from its headquarters in Manila, the ADB emphasized its commitment to supporting vulnerable coastal communities through coastal protection initiatives, upgrading national healthcare facilities, and accelerating Fiji’s transition to renewable energy.
Leah Gutierrez, ADB’s director general for the Pacific, stated, “This new CPS will build on ADB’s ongoing assistance to support more resilient public finances, quality infrastructure and services, and a greener and more diversified private sector.” She added that the partnership would align ADB’s support with Fiji’s recently launched National Development Plan 2025-2029.
The five-year strategy aims to strengthen Fiji’s climate and disaster resilience through innovative financial solutions, upgrades to critical infrastructure, reinforced climate policy reforms, and improved access to concessional climate finance.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, highlighted that the strategy reflects the strong partnership between the Government of Fiji and ADB, reinforcing future support with the National Development Plan.
The CPS will particularly focus on promoting private sector investment, advancing gender equality, and enhancing regional cooperation and integration. ADB has been a supporter of Fiji since 1970, committing 117 public sector loans, grants, and technical assistance, amounting to $991 million.
