The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has unveiled a new country partnership strategy (CPS) for Fiji covering the period from 2024 to 2028, focusing on enhancing public sector management, improving access to climate-resilient transportation infrastructure, and upgrading urban water and wastewater services.
The Manila-based organization announced the strategy, which emphasizes crucial areas for engagement, including coastal protection for vulnerable communities, upgrading national healthcare facilities, and expediting Fiji’s transition to renewable energy.
Leah Gutierrez, ADB’s director general for the Pacific, highlighted that this new CPS will extend the bank’s ongoing assistance to foster more resilient public finances, high-quality infrastructure and services, and a greener, more diverse private sector. She noted that the partnership will align ADB’s support with Fiji’s recently launched National Development Plan 2025-2029.
The five-year strategy aims to enhance Fiji’s resilience to climate change and disasters through innovative financial solutions, upgrades to critical infrastructure, reinforcement of climate policy reforms, and increased access to concessional climate finance.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad emphasized the importance of the close partnership between the Fijian government and ADB, stating that the strategy is in line with Fiji’s National Development Plan for the next five years.
This CPS will also focus on promoting private sector investments, advancing gender equality, and encouraging regional cooperation and integration. Since 1970, ADB has been a key supporter of Fiji, having committed a total of $991 million through 117 public sector loans, grants, and technical assistance.
