ADB Unveils Game-Changing Strategy for Fiji’s Future

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced its new Country Partnership Strategy (CPS) for Fiji, covering the period from 2024 to 2028. This strategy will prioritize assistance for public sector management, enhance access to climate-resilient transportation infrastructure, and improve urban water and wastewater services.

The Manila-based institution highlighted several emerging focus areas in the new CPS, including coastal protection for at-risk communities, upgrading national healthcare facilities, and accelerating the transition to renewable energy in Fiji.

ADB’s director general for the Pacific, Leah Gutierrez, stated that the new strategy aims to build on their ongoing support, which promotes more resilient public finances, quality infrastructure, and a greener private sector. She noted that the partnership would be aligned with Fiji’s recently launched National Development Plan for 2025-2029.

Over the next five years, the strategy will reinforce Fiji’s efforts to enhance climate and disaster resilience through innovative financial solutions, the upgrading of crucial infrastructure, climate policy reforms, and improved access to concessional climate funding.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad emphasized the collaborative relationship between Fiji and ADB, which aims to align future support with Fiji’s development goals.

The CPS will also focus on encouraging private sector investment, advancing gender equality, and promoting regional cooperation and integration.

Since 1970, ADB has provided substantial support to Fiji, committing 117 public sector loans, grants, and technical assistance totaling $991 million.
