The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has unveiled its new Country Partnership Strategy (CPS) with Fiji for the period of 2024 to 2028. This strategy will focus on enhancing public sector management, improving access to climate-resilient transport infrastructure, and developing climate-resilient urban water and wastewater services.
The Manila-based donor agency emphasized its commitment to address emerging issues such as coastal protection for at-risk communities, upgrading national healthcare facilities, and facilitating Fiji’s transition to renewable energy. Leah Gutierrez, ADB’s director general for the Pacific, stated that the new CPS aims to bolster public finances, enhance quality infrastructure and services, and promote a more sustainable and diverse private sector.
The strategy aligns with Fiji’s recently launched National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and is designed to support the country in enhancing climate and disaster resilience through innovative financial solutions, critical infrastructure upgrades, climate policy reforms, and improved access to concessional climate finance.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, highlighted the close collaboration between the Government of Fiji and ADB, noting that the strategy reflects this partnership and aligns with Fiji’s development efforts. The CPS will also focus on promoting private sector investment, advancing gender equality, and fostering regional cooperation.
Since its relationship with Fiji began in 1970, ADB has provided 117 public sector loans, grants, and technical assistance, amounting to a total of $991 million.
