ADB Unveils Ambitious New Strategy for Fiji’s Climate Resilience

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has unveiled its new country partnership strategy (CPS) with Fiji for 2024-2028, focusing on enhancing public sector management, improving access to climate-resilient transport infrastructure, and providing climate-resilient urban water and wastewater services.

The Manila-based organization highlighted its commitment to addressing coastal protection for at-risk communities, upgrading national healthcare facilities, and accelerating Fiji’s shift towards renewable energy.

Leah Gutierrez, ADB’s director general for the Pacific, stated, “This new CPS will build on ADB’s ongoing assistance to support more resilient public finances, quality infrastructure and services, and a greener and more diversified private sector.” She emphasized that the partnership will be tailored to Fiji’s recently launched National Development Plan 2025-2029.

The five-year strategy aims to strengthen Fiji’s resilience to climate and disaster challenges by introducing innovative financial solutions, enhancing critical infrastructure, supporting climate policy reforms, and improving access to concessional climate finance.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, noted that the strategy signifies a strong collaboration between the Government of Fiji and ADB, aligning future support with Fiji’s developmental goals.

The CPS will also focus on promoting private sector investment, advancing gender equality, and fostering regional cooperation and integration. Since 1970, ADB has been a key partner for Fiji, committing 117 public sector loans, grants, and technical assistance amounting to $991 million.
