Accountability or Insults? Opposition MP Challenges Fiji’s Minister on Infrastructure Crisis

Opposition MP Ketan Lal has called for the Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, to face the music and take accountability for the recent collapse of the Vuniyasi Bridge in Nadi. Responding to Tuisawau’s dismissive remarks, where the Minister labeled him as “childish” and “desperate,” Lal emphasized the need for leadership that prioritizes the safety and welfare of ordinary Fijians, rather than engaging in personal attacks.

Lal expressed disbelief at the Minister’s justification that flooding caused the bridge’s failure, arguing that infrastructure should be designed to withstand Fiji’s natural disasters, including floods and cyclones. He questioned why the bridge was not maintained or reinforced in light of its known risks, raising concerns about oversight within Tuisawau’s ministry.

“This incident is not merely about a collapsing bridge, but reflects a deeper dysfunction within the government,” Lal stated. He insisted that accountability should reign from the top, criticizing what he sees as a lack of responsibility from government leaders. “Ministers serve the people, not themselves,” he added, highlighting that the public deserves better than broken promises and neglected infrastructure.

This discourse brings to light a critical moment for governance in Fiji. The exchange not only reflects existing tensions between government officials and the opposition but also presents a unique opportunity to push for reforms in the management of essential public infrastructure. The concerns raised by Lal echo a growing demand for greater accountability and proactive governance that can restore public trust and prioritize the safety and well-being of all citizens.

As the government navigates these challenges, there is a hopeful perspective that constructive dialogue can lead to meaningful reforms. Ultimately, prioritizing infrastructure issues not only benefits the immediate safety of Fijians but reinforces a culture of responsible leadership that respondents increasingly seek.
