Academic Research and Media Development: A Vital Partnership

Academic research plays a crucial role in the development of our region, providing the ideas, truths, and data necessary to address numerous challenges. This was emphasized by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance during the launch of the book “Waves of Change: Media, Peace, and Development in the Pacific.” The event took place at the Pacific International Media Conference in Suva last night.

Biman Prasad, a co-editor of the book, explained that “Waves of Change” blends experiential wisdom with research to discuss development and progress in the Pacific region. The book is also co-edited by Dr. Shailendra Singh, Head of Journalism at the University of the South Pacific, and former USP lecturer Dr. Amrit Sarwal.

Prasad pointed out the need for researchers to navigate the crowded information age, adding that the rise of AI, social media, and the internet presents significant challenges. He stressed the importance of making research accessible to the public, as they are the primary funders of these efforts. This accessibility could also help secure better funding for future research.

The event also celebrated the 30th anniversary edition of the Pacific Journalism Review and honored its founder, Professor David Robie, who has been awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for his contributions to journalism and media education in the Asia-Pacific region.

Additionally, Prasad paid tribute to the late Vijendra Kumar, a pioneering figure in Pacific journalism and the first local editor of The Fiji Times. Kumar, who was also the deputy editor of the Courier Mail, passed away earlier this year. Prasad expressed his deepest condolences and appreciated Kumar’s service to Fiji, highlighting his inspiration to many during the formative years of media development in newly independent Pacific countries.

The Deputy Prime Minister’s remarks underscored the significant impact of academic research and historical contributions to the media landscape in the Pacific region.
