Abuse of Kava Consumption Leads to Family Breakdowns in Kadavu

The excessive consumption of kava in Kadavu has become a serious issue, according to Bulou Luisa Duikete, leader of the Kadavu Women’s Association. Duikete expressed concern that men’s kava consumption is causing family breakups and leading to financial strain, as funds are being redirected away from essential needs and living expenses.

“Most men in the village tend to neglect their families for a bowl of kava,” Duikete explained. “This has led to financial strain within families, especially if funds are redirected from essential needs and the cost of living.”

Due to this issue, many women on the island are being forced to take on dual roles, both caring for their families and securing food. In response, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka called on village headmen to take a stronger role in addressing this problem.

“It’s not our job alone as government to step in and assist every villager; we need your support,” Rabuka stated. He emphasized the need for communal effort to protect the future and maintain cultural identity.

“As the village headman, you are entrusted with ensuring the wellbeing and development of your community,” he said. This includes overseeing local governance, resolving disputes, and coordinating with authorities for essential services.

Rabuka reminded those present that being a village headman is not merely a title but a responsibility to improve the lives of community members under their care.
