The excessive consumption of kava in Kadavu is raising significant concerns. Bulou Luisa Duikete, leader of the Kadavu Women’s Association, highlighted the impact of this issue on families, calling on men to moderate their kava intake.
“The reality is most men back in the village tend to neglect their families for a bowl of kava,” said Ms. Duikete. “This has led to financial strain within families, especially if funds are redirected away from essential needs and the cost of living.”
She also pointed out that many women on the island are forced to take on dual roles of caring for their families and sourcing food due to this neglect.
In reaction to these concerns, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka urged village headmen to take more active roles in their communities. “It’s not our job alone as government to step in and assist every villager; we need your support,” Mr. Rabuka stated. “Communal effort is needed, and we need to keep our future and identity intact.”
“As the village headman, you are entrusted with ensuring the wellbeing and development of your community. This includes overseeing local governance, resolving disputes, and coordinating with authorities for essential services,” he said.
The Prime Minister reminded those in attendance that the role of a village headman is not merely a title but a responsibility to improve the lives of those under their care.
