Nazia Ali, the mother of Hazrat Shihaab Ali, was in search of answers regarding her son’s health until September 29, 2014, when their lives took a drastic turn. A pediatrician at Suva Private Hospital, who was deeply worried about Hazrat’s condition, urgently recommended that they go to the Children’s Ward at CWM Hospital. This caring doctor even accompanied them to ensure they arrived safely, a gesture that Nazia holds dear.
The following morning, their worst fears were realized when Hazrat was diagnosed with leukemia, a devastating blow to the Ali family. Such a diagnosis profoundly affects not only the young patient but also their loved ones. Hazrat endured nearly three years of treatment in the pediatric oncology department at CWM Hospital, during which time Nazia and her family made significant sacrifices to protect him from infections, including avoiding social gatherings.
Despite the challenges they faced, Nazia expresses immense gratitude for the care Hazrat received during his treatment. She fondly remembers how the doctors and nurses at CWM Hospital provided exceptional care and even celebrated Hazrat’s third birthday with a cake at the hospital.
In addition to the medical team, Nazia acknowledges the invaluable support she received from WOWS Kids Fiji, an organization focused on assisting children with cancer and their families. “WOWS Kids Fiji was a lifeline for us,” she states, highlighting their emotional and practical support during a challenging time, reassuring Nazia that they understood what her family was going through.
Throughout this challenging journey, Hazrat has exemplified strength and resilience. Despite the long months spent in the hospital and enduring pain, he has managed to maintain a smile that serves as a symbol of hope and endurance. Nazia’s dedication led her to leave her job to be by his side constantly, as she prayed for his recovery.
Now a Year 7 student at Makoi Muslim Primary School, Hazrat continues to confront his challenges with remarkable courage. His story transcends mere survival; it illustrates the indomitable spirit of a young boy refusing to succumb to illness. To his family, Hazrat is not only their son but a hero and a beacon of hope for all facing similar challenges.
