Hazrat Shihaab Ali’s journey began with a desperate search for answers from medical professionals, with his mother, Nazia, seeking guidance until a pivotal moment on September 29, 2014. A concerned pediatrician at Suva Private Hospital recommended immediate transfer to the Children’s Ward at CWM Hospital, even accompanying them to ensure they arrived safely—a gesture of kindness that Nazia deeply appreciates.

The following day brought devastating news: Hazrat was diagnosed with leukemia. The diagnosis had a profound effect on the entire Ali family. For nearly three years, Hazrat received treatment at CWM Hospital’s pediatric oncology department, during which the family faced numerous challenges. They had to make significant personal sacrifices, curtailing their social life to protect Hazrat from potential infections, opting to stay home rather than attend family gatherings.

Despite the hardships, Nazia expresses immense gratitude for the care provided to Hazrat. “The doctors and nurses at CWM Hospital were absolutely wonderful. They provided the utmost care throughout nearly three years of his treatment,” she recalls, sharing how the staff even celebrated Hazrat’s third birthday with a cake at the hospital.

In addition to the medical support, Nazia highlights the importance of WOWS Kids Fiji, an organization dedicated to assisting children with cancer and their families. “WOWS Kids Fiji was a lifeline for us,” she states. “Their emotional and practical support was invaluable. They understood what we were going through and were always there when we needed them.”

Throughout this challenging time, Hazrat has emerged as a symbol of strength and resilience. Despite enduring pain and spending long months in a hospital room, he has maintained his joyful spirit, serving as a beacon of hope. Nazia left her job to be by his side continuously, praying for his recovery and strength. Every sacrifice made was worth it for her.

Now a Year 7 student at Makoi Muslim Primary School, Hazrat continues his fight with the same courage that has characterized his journey. His story transcends mere survival; it embodies the unbreakable spirit of a young boy determined to overcome illness. For Nazia and her family, Hazrat is more than just a son—he is a hero, a symbol of hope for all those facing similar struggles.
