The Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has reiterated his strong endorsement of the collective identity of all citizens as “Fijians,” as outlined in the 2013 Constitution. During a workshop aimed at enhancing social cohesion in Fiji, Tikoduadua emphasized the importance of unity among all Fijians, regardless of their differing backgrounds.
“I want to be clear – I believe, without question, that we are all Fijians,” he stated. This statement reinforces his dedication to fostering a national identity that transcends ethnic divisions or other disparities. Tikoduadua asserted, “No label, difference, or background should divide us. Our diversity enriches our nation, making it strong, vibrant, and resilient.”
He explained that recognizing each other as equals and valuing unique perspectives are crucial in building a future where all Fijians can thrive and actively contribute to society. Tikoduadua, who identifies as an iTaukei Christian Catholic, emphasized that the term “Fijian” belongs to everyone and should not be monopolized by any group.
The Minister also highlighted the significance of partnerships with international organizations, including the United Nations Development Programme, UN Women, and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. These collaborations symbolize a shared commitment to unity, respect, and inclusion as Fiji moves forward in building a resilient and cohesive society where every individual is appreciated as part of the Fijian community.
This commitment to unity and recognition of diversity showcases a hopeful vision for Fiji’s future, fostering a strong sense of national identity while ensuring that all voices are heard and valued. Such initiatives are vital in nurturing harmony and resilience within a diverse cultural landscape.
Overall, Tikoduadua’s reaffirmation serves as a reminder of the strength found in unity and the importance of working together towards a common goal for the benefit of all citizens.
