Families from Koro in Levuka, Lomaiviti, were filled with joy and anticipation as they welcomed the MV Captain Inoke, a new vessel from Goundar Shipping Limited. This event held special significance for the Ratotodro family, as the ship was named in honor of their late father, Captain Inoke Ratotodro.
Melaia Ratotodro, the eldest daughter, was overcome with emotion as the vessel arrived at Port Mua-i-Walu, reflecting on her father’s legacy. “Our dad, who was one of the longest-serving staff at Goundar Shipping Limited, passed away last October. In his honor, the company chose to name this vessel after him,” she shared. “We may miss him dearly, but we are grateful for what the company has done.” Captain Inoke had dedicated nearly 30 years to the organization as a hardworking and knowledgeable employee.
George Goundar, the managing director of Goundar Shipping, expressed his sentiments, stating that Mr. Ratotodro was not just an employee but a close friend. “When I started this company in 2011, he was right there, helping me launch it,” he recalled. “He provided valuable advice and insights into the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji, essentially running the operational side.”
The MV Captain Inoke is now under the command of Sainimere Qutonilaba, who began her journey with Goundar Shipping as a cadet in 2011 and has played a key role in bringing new vessels into the fleet. Before stepping aboard for a tour, a traditional ceremony was held to honor the vessel and its namesake.
This event serves as a testament to the deep connections formed within the maritime community, showcasing how legacies can be honored through continued service and commitment. It also highlights the importance of camaraderie and respect within organizations, especially as they celebrate new milestones together.
To add a hopeful note, this vessel’s launch represents not only the memory of Captain Inoke Ratotodro but also the ongoing growth and progress of Goundar Shipping, which continues to strengthen its ties to the community and its workforce.
