The family of Eparama Dremoka, a former Marist Brothers High School Under-16 rugby player whose grave was discovered burnt last Friday, has opted for forgiveness rather than pursuing complaints. The Dremoka family had recently laid their son to rest in June when they learned that a post circulating on social media displayed images of the scorched grave at Lovonilase Cemetery in Suva, along with flowers reduced to ashes.
In an emotional response to the incident, Kaminieli Dremoka, Eparama’s father, expressed his feelings, saying, “I can’t say anything because I don’t know anything. Pursuing this would bring more hurt to us as his parents, so we have talked about it as a couple and have chosen to forgive.” He reflected on the possibility that there might be individuals with animosity towards his son but expressed understanding of the situation.
The Dremoka family learned about the disturbing pictures while they were in Nadi. Mr. Dremoka pondered what his son would have thought in such a scenario. “My son was full of positivity; this is the devil’s work to bring more anger and hatred among us,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude to the Under-16 team parents, who displayed kindness by gathering last Saturday to clean his son’s grave. “When we came back on Saturday afternoon to check, the grave was like it was before. I am thankful to the U16 boys and their parents who have always shown their support from the day he passed until the funeral; they have always been their brother’s keeper.”
