Many patrons at the Nausori Club would resonate with the story of bartender Rajbahadur Singh, fondly known as Ram Singh. The 70-year-old from Buiduna, who served his last drink in late July after an impressive 50 years in bartending, has become a well-known figure in the township of Nausori.
Ram began his career on July 30, 1974, at the age of 20 as a cleaner at the Nausori Club. After six months, he transitioned to bartending, a role he embraced wholeheartedly. “I started serving drinks and giving change from orders. Customers were very good and kind,” he recounted. The enjoyable atmosphere and friendly clientele encouraged Ram to dedicate half a century to the club.
He noted that his workdays began at 10 AM and often ended at 11 PM, a routine he maintained for decades, which included assisting in food service as well. Ram cherished the amiable environment, the friendships he formed over the years, and the esteemed individuals he met, including notable figures such as the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.
Throughout his time behind the bar, Ram gained valuable knowledge and experience, stating, “Gaining knowledge helps your experience. You can’t learn things overnight.” After 50 years in the field, he announced his retirement, reflecting on the popular drinks he served, particularly whiskey and beer, enjoyed dry by many patrons.
Ram attributed part of his success to the strong leadership of the club committee, especially the current president Ambika Nand and secretary Uma Kant Patel, highlighting their role in enabling “many prosperous ventures.” As he leaves the Nausori Club, Ram expressed pride in being part of its community and plans to return to visit occasionally.
His bartending career allowed him to support his extended family, and he noted that his late mother would have been proud of his retirement. Looking to the future, Ram plans to start a small garden at home, with help from his neighbors. While he will miss the lively bar atmosphere, he looks forward to spending more time with his family.
Ram’s story serves as a reminder that there are no limits to achieving one’s goals, even in the later stages of life.
