Pio Tikoduadua, the Minister for Home Affairs, has reiterated his strong endorsement of the term ‘Fijian’ as a unifying identity for all citizens, aligning with the principles set forth in the 2013 Constitution.
During a workshop aimed at enhancing social cohesion in the nation, Tikoduadua emphasized the importance of unity among Fijians, regardless of their individual backgrounds. He declared with conviction, “We are all Fijians,” underlining his belief in a collective national identity and actively opposing any divisive narrative based on ethnicity or other differences.
In his remarks, he stated, “No label, difference, or background should divide us. Our diversity enriches us and is what makes our nation strong, vibrant, and resilient.” He articulated a vision where embracing each other’s equality leads to opportunities for every Fijian to thrive and contribute to society.
Tikoduadua, identifying himself as an iTaukei and a Catholic, insisted that the term “Fijian” should belong to all citizens and not be monopolized by any single group. He emphasized that fostering social cohesion would reinforce the fundamental values of peace, human rights, and civic engagement in Fiji.
Highlighting the collaboration with the United Nations and other organizations, he noted that this partnership exemplifies a collective commitment to unity, respect, and inclusivity in respecting Fiji’s diverse cultural landscape. By working together, Tikoduadua believes they can validate an inclusive path forward, further strengthening the fabric of Fijian society.
This commitment to a shared identity offers a hopeful perspective for Fiji’s future, suggesting that unity in diversity can lead to a stronger, more resilient nation. As the country continues to embrace inclusivity, it may pave the way for a harmonious society where every individual is cherished as part of the Fijian family.
