Salesia Ledua Daukana recently experienced an emotional milestone as she watched her son, Inia Tabuavou, take to the field for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua. A single mother from Baravi, Nadroga, Daukana has raised Inia on her own since the heartbreaking loss of his father in 2013 when Inia was just in year 6. Now at 22 years old, Inia proudly dons the number 12 jersey for the Drua.
Daukana and her family traveled to Lautoka to show their steadfast support for Inia and the team, which has been struggling with three consecutive losses. “We came as a family to support him and the team because they need encouragement,” Daukana stated, reflecting her belief that heightened morale can help the team turn around their current situation.
Her unwavering support for her son is rooted in her strong faith in God, which she instills in Inia as a source of strength. Inia’s path to professional rugby began with his selection for the Fiji under-16 national team, leading him to further opportunities, including a scholarship to New Zealand. He attended prominent schools such as Rotorua Boys’ High School and Westlake Boys’ High School before joining the prestigious Racing 92 Academy in France’s Top 14.
Inia’s move back to Fiji to represent the Drua is a testament to his mother’s sacrifices and dedication. “No matter the results, we will always stand by them. We believe in them,” Daukana affirmed. Every match, to her, symbolizes love, faith, and resilience, showcasing a heartfelt story of family support intertwined with sports.
