A Sanctuary for Strength: New Retreat Opens for Women Cancer Survivors in Fiji

The Self Care Retreat Hub for women cancer survivors was inaugurated in Nabua, marking a crucial development in supporting those affected by cancer. Mereane Vavataga, the CEO of Self Care Retreat Fiji, highlighted the significance of the hub as a sanctuary for women who have battled cancer.

“This is an oasis where women cancer survivors can find respite when their illness becomes overwhelming,” Vavataga stated, emphasizing that it’s a secure environment for them to share their experiences and the challenges they face. Founded in 2021, the NGO is dedicated to aiding women cancer survivors in their spiritual, emotional, and mental recovery.

The organization organizes biannual retreats for different groups of survivors at a hotel, fostering relationships and building trust. This is followed by a three-week Bible study program focused on spiritual growth and inner healing.

At the opening ceremony, Senior Pastor Manasa Kolivuso of Faith Harvest Church in Nausori praised the initiative, expressing gratitude for the creation of a safe haven for those seeking support.

Bulamarau Tikoduadua, a cancer survivor, shared her inspiring journey at the event, recounting her experience of being paralyzed due to an aggressive form of cancer. Tikoduadua underlined the necessity of support systems like the Self Care Retreat Hub, noting the loneliness that follows cancer treatment.

Vavataga expressed hopes for the organization’s future, including plans to establish a hospice, but emphasized this is just the start. The Self Care Retreat Fiji depends on donations and partnerships to maintain its activities, with Vavataga even participating in a fundraising campaign by shaving her head.
