A new hub aimed at supporting women cancer survivors was inaugurated yesterday in Nabua, marking an important milestone for the community. The Self Care Retreat Fiji, created as a sanctuary, emphasizes the significance of this facility for those affected by cancer.
Mereane Vavataga, the chief executive officer of Self Care Retreat Fiji, elaborated on the purpose of the hub. “It’s an oasis where women cancer survivors can come when sickness overwhelms them,” she stated, noting that it provides a safe environment for individuals to share their experiences and challenges.
Founded in 2021, the non-profit organization centers on the spiritual, emotional, and mental recovery of women who have survived cancer. Vavataga explained that the organization organizes two annual retreats, where they build relationships with different groups of survivors, followed by a three-week Bible study program focused on various aspects of healing and personal transformation.
During the opening ceremony, Senior Pastor Manasa Kolivuso of Faith Harvest Church praised the initiative, expressing gratitude for the establishment of a safe space for individuals facing similar challenges.
Bulamarau Tikoduadua, a cancer survivor, shared her personal story at the event. “A year ago today, I was completely paralysed. My cancer journey was short but aggressive,” she remarked, underlining the necessity of support systems like the Self Care Retreat Hub. She emphasized the loneliness often felt in cancer aftercare and her appreciation for the organization.
Vavataga also shared future goals, including aspirations to open a hospice, stating that this hub is just the beginning. The Self Care Retreat Fiji is dependent on donations and partnerships for its continued operation. Vavataga mentioned her commitment to fundraising, highlighting her recent participation in the ‘Shave it or Save it’ campaign, where she shaved her hair to help raise funds for the retreat.
